My wife in her quest for coupns, which is saving us about $10.00 every time we goto the store, she recently was infected with a Desktop Hijack software. This software basically makes yo u think you have the Blue Screen of Death from the old W2K systems. This was an XP home machine, I must say quite cleaver but I really wish they would spend their time elsewhere to make a contribution to societly.

Ok sorry for the Rant, Heres how to fix it.

I basically spent the better half the of last night and into this morning fixing Debs computer from this virus.

First thing you will notice is a picture in the backgournd of your window that tells you, you need to download Windows2008antivirus program. To support this fictious claim, they have cleaverly shut down the ability for you to change the desktop settings making it appear that you have a blue screen of death only to find out its just the screen saver that kicks in. Very cleaver. Now when you try to change the sceen saver you will notice that the tab has been removed using a windows policy statement. "This person has way too much time on their hands and needs a job in the computer industry"

Anyway. Amurge to the rescue.

1. Run any antivirus program you have "its most likely not going to work" but give it a try
2. Download www.alt-networking.com/coin_modules/downloads/dload.php?id=9 Click rhis link and download and run this file
3. Goto www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Line 51
     ScreenSaver Disable/Enable or Tab Missing,
Click on the Tab Missing option and it should return your properties window back to normal.
4. Enter windows in "Safe Mode" "Hold down the F8 key when the machine it start up, this will give you the option to boot with networking. Choose that option.
5. Clean out all temp files and temorary internet files. look for andy mysterious looking folders int eh C drive that might be hidden.
6. In the windows/system32 folder there might be a screen saver file blphc9b2j0en3g.sav, Delete this file it is the screen saver for blue screen of death making you think that you have computer problems.

Please feel free to call Amurge at 847-751-7590 or 630-363-8157 Speak directly to Deb or I and we can walk you through this process

As always thanks for the time and I hope you didn't get this latest virus.

Sincerley,

A new year brings on new thoughts on how to get your site to top. Well I have been a clear advocate of utilizing free classified ads, when they are done correctly. DON'T OVER USE THEM or POST in unrelated categories. These types of actions can actually get you removed from a service and blacklisted from their site. So resist the temptation to paste your site all over the classifieds and keep it in the appropriate category for your listing.

If you are selling a service, keep your listing to the service portions of the classifieds.

Well a new year and a new site for you to test out your SEO campaign.

I have been working with http://expo.live.com/ and they are actually pretty good when it comes to listing your ads. Make sure that your title of your ad is very close to the key words that you are trying to post. However, don't just make the title of the ad all keywords. Keep it some type of statement or even better a sentence.

Well after a short vacation it's back to business. I thought today I would discuss the concept of using free online classified ads or service ads to help you with your SEO campaign.

Everyone knows that internet is growing at alarming rates. This is good, you can find sites all over the internet that allow you to post free classified ads.

This can be seen with the boom of http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites.html. The key to this type of advertising is it can bring you into a very localized area of business or just the opposite and give you a very broad area of business. Depending on your business you may want to focus on free localized ads.

Example:

If your business is a dog grooming business and has a brick and mortar store front, you most likely do not want to advertise in California if your business is located in NYC.

However, if in this same dog grooming business you have a very unique type of dog food or biscuits that you want to ship all of the country, then you can focus your ad to do so.

When considering this type of advertising make sure that your ad targets the right customers. Give them enough information to be curious to click through to your site without giving away the entire store.

This is another easy method of getting your site listed with the major search engines. Make sure that you put your URL in the ad even if they have a spot for your URL when posting the ad. Be careful here, make sure there is no disclaimer that warns against doing this. Also, make sure that your posting your ad to the appropriate category. I can tell you that people do not like to read ads that they are not looking for. If they are posted in the wrong category, chances are that you will most likely turn away customers.

Don't forget that offer. Make it big and make it strong.

TTFN:

Amurge has hosting plans that start at just $3.99

I should have guessed this one was coming. I received a some replies asking for some locations where you can find free directories.

I like this one:

http://www.seocompany.ca/directory/free-directories.html

Be careful as not all of the directories listed here are free. The best method to work this is to select the listing and copy the table cells and paste them into Excel. This gives you the ability to sort them by PR rate and cost, it also gives you the ability to add a column for submitted to that way you know where you left off.

Remember that this is a great way to get your site on search engines quickly. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at info@amurge.com or visit our web site at www.amurge.com.

To link or not to link that seems to be the question. After years of researching SEO online and reading all sorts of different articles about linking, I have clearly determined that you need to link. Why, you ask do I need to link?

The more inbound links that you have on your site the greater possibility that someone is going to find you. Not to mention that Google puts alot of weight into the number of INBOUND links that you have.

Now, there has been several discussions on whether or not it's important to have your links on sites that have a high PR rating. The fact is that you have no control over what sites put your link on their site. Goggle has come out and said that if your site is linked to a site that has a poor PR rating that this is not taken negatively in rating your site. HOWEVER, there is one thing that you want to be careful of. Notice I have been talking here about INBOUND links. These are links that are linked from another site to yours.

What you don't want to have in a bunch of links on your site that point to sites with a low PR rating. This is something that will clearly hurt your PR rating. If you decide to have reciprocal links on your site because they put your link on their site, make sure its a site that is related to your industry or a site that has a high PR rating.

So let me summarize this:

Link away - inbound links will help

Utilize directories, blogs and misc search engines

Careful of outbound reciprocal links

In a nut shell link away, find as many directories that you can. Search Google for Free Directory Listings. This does take time. In the long run you will get better ratings because of your efforts. Don't expect to see immediate results.

Check out my site at www.amurge.com/seo.html for a small listing of sites and more information.

Check your hosting plan before the end of the year. Most web hosting plans will expire at the begining of the year in January. Over the years Amurge has been able to save companies and non-profit organizations thousands per year just by reviewing their hosting plans and moving to a lower cost provider.

Alot of people out there might be frightened by a low cost provider or think that they won't get the same support. Actually, the opposite is usually the case, the low cost hosting providers typically have more service offerings at a less price then what you are paying. The majority of the low cost providers have 24x7 technical support.

Ok so what does this mean to you, that you might be able to move your hosting to a provider that will better support your needs at a lower cost. Don't take the web designers word for it do your homework and look at the differences before making a decision.

Some points to look at before you make the decision to move hosting providers:

Look at the plan that you are paying for and compare the price to what you would be paying you could save a ton of money

Make sure that the monthly transfer rates are the same or better

Make sure the storage capacity for the plan is the same or better

Make sure you get the email for free ( most companies are doing this, unless its Exchange hosting )

Call both providers and see what type of response you get from both sales and support

These are just a couple of points to think about before you renew your hosting plan. Reviewing your hosting plan can save you alot of money on an annual basis. Check out www.amurge.com for our current rates.
